Got you beat, I think. I started watching Y&R in the mid '70s, back when Jill was just the Chancellors' maid, before the hubby (can't remember his name) fell in love w/Jill and left Kay for Jill (and even then, Kay seemed old). I think the character must have improved over the years; I stopped watching in the '80s (and my viewing in the '80s was always sporadic). Prior to that, she was kind of a whiny, drunken shrew, and not very likable. Jill was the sympathetic character back then; she and her brother Snapper Foster were the working class characters to balance out the wealthy What-was-their-names (it's been too many decades; I no longer remember. None of those characters are on the show anymore). Snapper was married to, um, Chris, who had sisters Leslie and Lorie. Oh, right, the Brooks family were the rich ones back then. The newer ones, Jack and his sisters, came later. (Oh, right--the Abbotts. And Victor Newman and his stripper girlfriend Nikki, I think were just coming onto the show when I stopped watching.)
Jeanne Cooper had a long and clearly very successful career-she was one of the grand dames of soaps. And Y&R has been running since 1973!

XD When I first started watching Y&R, Phillip [that was the name of Katherine's hubby] Sr. was dead, and Phillip Jr [Jill's son by him. XD] was just a baby. I got on board before the current actress playing Jill [can't recall her name, too lazy to look it up right now] migrated from 'Capital' to replace the previous one [and having *watched* 'Capital' it was a wee bit disconcerting, because that was my first experience of an actor/actress going from one soap I watch, to another soap I watch. XD]. There was just some *something* that Y&R had that I kept coming back to [and I felt like one of the ONLY people that didn't like Cricket/Christine very much. LOL] even when I stopped watching other soaps. It was also fun when Bradley Bell started 'Bold & the Beautiful', because there's been *several* times characters have crossed from one show to the other because he does both [and back again, from what I gather, in the case of one recent character. LOL].
And yeah the Abbotts and Victor and Nikki were All The Things when I first started watching the show. hee.
Cricket. Thatwas her name, not Chris. I was partially right, anyway. *g* I was watching Y&R then during my summer breaks from high school, at the same time as the first throes of my first fandom, Star Trek.
I was always a fan of Leslie & Brad. And the evil sister Loree.
The only character that seemed to survive from that time was the Foster siblings' mother, Liz, who in the long run married, I think, Stuart Brooks (the dad).
My sister stopped watching Y&R years ago, but she STILL watches The Bold & the Beautiful. I don't know how she does it. Really? Ridge and Brook(e)--same story, 30+ years. *headdesk* And Ridge pretty much had the same hairstyle last time I saw him. (A couple of mos ago, maybe?) Handsome guy, no question, but...well, there's a reason he never broke out of soaps. Still, it';s a living, so more power to him.
XD Depends on who's talking anymore, but I think Danny is the only char that still calls her Cricket, usually it's Chris or Christine. But back then, it was Cricket, and for the longest time I wondered what kind of weirdo would name their kid that.... LOL
Oh GOD Brooke and Ridge.... *acks* I liked them at first, but good *lord* those two really need to make up their minds and make it STICK! I pretty much gave up B&B years ago, despite several actors I like having migrated over there. Of course, Victor & Nikki have done the same dance on Y&R, but I tend to ignore them for the most part anyway. Victor really annoys me, despite the fact that I've always thought the guy playing him was a handsome man.
Though with Ridge? There was a point when they let him have his greying hair, as I recall. Then the next time I saw it it was the jet black again. Really? Let the poor guy age gracefully, will ya? And no, I don't think he's *ever* changed his hairstyle....LOL Maybe he's wearing a wig? XD
Acting on a soap is a tough grind....and some pull off their scenes BRILLIANTLY. Some...don't. But that's okay too. Usually. LOL
Really? I think I very vaguely remember the Danny character ( a singer, right?)--I didn't think he was on anymore, either, and I definitely thought that Cricket/Chris/Christine was long-forgotten along with the rest of the Brookses--I had no idea they had ever been mentioned after 1980-something when the Abbott family came in. (I'm not even sure how they came in.)
Victor Newman--a rich, arrogant, patriarchal asshole (and I remember reading somewhere that the actor wasn't far different). So, eww. But, yes, for many years, good looking. But that means nothing when they're arrogant assholes.
The actor who plays Ridge may show up on time and never take a sick day and stay in shape and be there on the job every day...but he never has been and never will be a good actor. Still, hey, he's had a good career and presumably paid his mortgage with TB&TB. I just don't get why anybody would give a rat's ass about him & Brooke 30+ years down the line.
XD ....actually Cricket is back on Y&R. Danny did a brief guest shot....oh a year ago? More recently, anyway. [and yeah, the char's a singer...much like the actor that plays him...though he does mostly Broadway, as I recall] Didn't remember her last name though...LOL Think she goes by 'Christine Blair' or something like that now.
RE: Victor. SO TRUE!! Some guy could be Adonis, and if he was an arrogant jerk I might admire him from afar but that's about it. Of course, I have a bit of a higher tolerance for that sort of thing, considering the fact that several of the guys in my family have a bit of an arrogance streak. xD
oh man, really. I mean, with Ridge & Brooke it's the same thing OVER AND OVER again. Really. The dead horse has been beat enough, find a new spin for heaven's sake. Ridge is really nothing more than Fluffy Man-Candy. Good thing too, since you're right about the actor being...not so great. XD
We looooooooooooooooooved Oblivion, despite the fact that Tom Cruise was in it. It takes a hell of a movie to make me not care about Tom Cruise, and this was that movie.
XD Tom Cruise seems to do okay in sci-fi flicks. The hubby and I both liked 'Minority Report'. A lot.
Though the *one* quibble the hubby had about it though, was the controlling of the drones. LOL
